The game was originally started by Kalyanji Bhagat, a farmer from Gujarat, who would take bets on the opening and closing rates of cotton. It soon became popular among the textile mill workers in Mumbai and gradually spread to other cities in India. Over the years, the game has evolved and now includes betting on numbers, playing cards, and even horse racing.
