How does mifepristone work in the abortion process?
Mifepristone is the first step in a medical abortion. This pill works by blocking the hormone progesterone, which is necessary for the pregnancy to continue. Without progesterone, the lining of the uterus breaks down, and the pregnancy can no longer survive. After taking mifepristone, the second medication, misoprostol, is used to complete the abortion by inducing contractions and emptying the uterus. The combination of these two drugs is effective in ending pregnancies up to 10 weeks. Mifepristone alone doesn’t complete the abortion; it must be followed by misoprostol for the process to be successful.
